Welcome to Caneel Bay Resort

Planning for the Future

Honoring the Vision ... Rebuilding the Dream

Greetings from America’s Caribbean.

On December 1st, 1956, Caneel Bay Resort, and the Virgin Islands National Park (VINP) were officially opened, fulfilling the vision of American philanthropist and conservationist Laurance S. Rockefeller. With his donation to create the VINP, Mr. Rockefeller helped preserve in perpetuity the extraordinary natural beauty of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands.   By building the Caneel Bay Resort, Mr. Rockefeller ensured a special place for visitors to stay which provided significant employment and financial resource to the local community.  Working together for the past 65 years, Caneel Bay and the VINP have ensured an exceptional experience that, through a sensitive and respectful management philosophy, provides for the long-term well-being and sustainability of the local St. John community.

The devastation of back-to-back Category 5 Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017 rendered portions of Caneel Bay uninhabitable, forcing it to temporarily close to guests. Since then, we have worked diligently to rebuild Caneel Bay - to restore this beloved vacation destination and re-establish a critical contributor to the economic health of the U.S. Virgins Islands and its people.

We are working hard to re-open Caneel Bay. The legacy of protection, conservation and environmental responsibility is paramount to the restoration of Caneel Bay Resort. The low-impact, mid-century modern architecture will be honored, and design features will celebrate both the cultural and natural character of St. John. In a highly competitive tourism market, Caneel Bay Resort will stand out for its commitment to the environment, people, and history of St. John and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

While work to reopen Caneel Bay continues, we have gifts, and apparel including T-shirts and caps (featuring the iconic Caneel Bay Resort petroglyph) available for sale by clicking on the SHOP prompt below.

Caneel Bay leases private villas on Herrick Hill and inquiries may be directed to info@caneelbay.com.

On Thursday, June 30th, 2022, EHI Acquisitions, LLC (“EHI”) and CBI Acquisitions, LLC, the operators of Caneel Bay Resort on St. John, Virgin Islands, filed a lawsuit against the United States to settle ownership of the Resort.
