Plan Your Escape

  • Overview

Set on a 170-acre peninsula amid the lush beauty of the Virgin Islands National Park and seven picturesque beaches, Caneel Bay is one of the most breathtaking vacation destinations in the Caribbean. Discovered by Laurance Rockefeller while sailing on a family cruise, this luxury hideaway is accessible only by boat or ferry and its beaches are widely considered to be among the best in the world. A steadfast environmentalist and preservationist, Laurance Rockefeller was dedicated to creating a destination that would live in harmony with its natural environment.

Caneel Bay opened its doors on December 1st, 1956. Since that day, the resort has remained faithful to Laurance Rockefeller’s original dream of simple splendor in a pristine natural setting. It is a rare destination where guests can find sanctuary from the stress and distractions of everyday life. It is a place to truly “unplug,” where guest rooms are free of telephones and televisions. Finally, it is a place for making new memories - whether you’re connecting with loved ones on a greatly anticipated family vacation or a long overdue romantic getaway.

Since the 1950s Caneel Bay has developed, owned, and managed commercial, hotel and residential real estate. With a five-star resort as its anchor development, Caneel Bay has expertise in site selection, feasibility analysis, design and development, marketing, and long-term asset and property management. Today, Caneel Bay is one of only a few marine environments within the U.S. National Park System and is home to abundant wildlife as well as colorful coral reefs that teem with underwater life. Here, turtles and dolphins freely roam their natural habitat while guests explore the pristine natural surroundings of this truly unique Caribbean resort.

    Caneel Bay Beaches

Caneel Bay is home to seven of the top beaches in the Caribbean — one for each day of the week.

SCOTT: Stroll along the picture-perfect sands of Scott Beach and gaze at the turtles as they munch on sea grass. Here, the waters are gentle and ideal for listing along lazily on a raft or float.

PARADISE: This miniature haven, nestled at the end of Cottage Point prior to Scott Beach, is the perfect place to escape to for serene moments of calm.

TURTLE BAY: Gaze down from Turtle Bay Estate House to the pristine white crescent of beach below and watch as boats travel between St. Thomas and Tortola; an ideal spot for snorkeling.

CANEEL: The most popular beach on the resort, Caneel Beach offers active and adventurous guests the use of Sunfish sailboats, sea kayaks and paddle boards.

HAWKSNEST: The first beach to catch the sunrise and offers a quiet shady sanctuary in the afternoons. The rocks at both ends of this east-facing beach offer excellent snorkeling.

LITTLE CANEEL: This tiny refuge is tucked away just west of the dock and is the perfect spot to study the boats in the harbor while you unwind.

HONEYMOON: Take the roadway heading west from Little Caneel (about a ten-minute walk along a gravel track) where you will find the pristine sand of Honeymoon Beach. Located here is the VI Ecotours Honeymoon Beach Hut which offers daily rental of their equipment, as well as kayaking, hiking and snorkeling tours accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. There is a small store and a restroom available at the hut. You will also find Cannella's Honeymoon Beach Hut here, where you can order beverages, sandwiches and light snacks. Snorkeling is excellent along the reefs at each end of the beach. At the far end of Honeymoon Beach is the start of the Lind Trail, which offers a fairly strenuous forty-minute hike into Cruz Bay.
